Internet TV and the Evolving Market
May 22, 2007
The nextMadisonAve conversation held in our studio confirmed to me that we are in the middle of a revolution. As in any revolution the future is decidedly uncertain but there are opportunities everywhere. What will the Internet mean to the way we watch television and how advertisers pay us to make it?
I recently heard about the sitcom Break A Leg. It's fairly funny, maybe the best of the top shows so far (The Burg, LG15, or the "big hit" Prom Queen funded by Michael Eisner.) A number of players are entering this space as we watch the battle between Internet delivery and set-top boxes begin.
Break A Leg is different in a couple ways: First of all it's actually funny, secondly they are offering the opportunity to buy product placement in their show. The rumor is that beginning with episode 3 they will place your product in their show for $500. The price goes up for Episode 4.
Is this even true? Is this the future? No one can be sure. The Television market is rapidly becoming as confused as the Music industry already is. Sponsorship? Banner ads, Adsense? Product Placement? It might well be a combination, just like it always has been. The key to successful marketing is sifting through the available advertising and marketing options to figure out which are the best way to let the public know what you've got!
Many decry the difficulties in figuring out this new market but I say variety is the spice of life. The more options we have to get the word out the better we can serve our clients!
